Anonymous Sketch Artist Leaves His Mark In a TTC Subway Train In Toronto

Sketches found on three pages of the 24 hrs newspaper of March 24, 2017

It was Friday, March 24, when I was going to downtown Toronto on a TTC subway train, I came across a fellow passenger beside me flipping through the day's free daily newspaper 24 hrs. 

On a few pages, there were some hand-drawn sketches beside some photos of personalities printed with related news. I commented, "Beautiful sketches!" "Oh,no!" the passenger replied, " I didn't do these. These were done by someone else who left the newspaper on this seat." After going through the paper, the passenger left it on the seat and got down in the third station. 

Then the idea came to my mind that I can use the anonymous artist's sketches in my blog as a feature. The result is what you are seeing in this posting of mine.

Brother Shyamol James Gomes, CSC: A Budding Artist With a Promise

Brother Shyamol James Gomes, CSC

Brother Shyamol James Gomes, CSC, (27),  is a student of Fine Arts at the University of Development Alternative (UODA), Dhaka, with a major in drawing and painting. In course of his study he has been practising his craft regularly.

I came across his range of art work when I was at St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School compound at Mohammadpur, Dhaka, in January last. I was impressed with his work that shows a bright promise in   future.

This budding artist, if he continues his art work relentlessly in spite of his service as a Religious Brother, will be an asset for the Catholic Church in Bangladesh. He will be able to inspire Christian youths to go for studies in art, painting and sculpture, where only few have ventured so far. Besides, he will also be able to paint on religious themes for the local Church needs.

Brother Gomes is short in stature with a head full of black hair and equally black beard on his face. Sometimes he looks submerged in thoughtful mood. This may be due to his mind busy with new ideas for more artwork.

Born at the village of Bangalhawala under Tumilia Catholic parish of Gazipur District, Bangladesh, Brother Gomes received inspiration for drawing and painting from his father. “My father is a natural artist who inspired me. I got it genetically from him. I showed an interest in studying fine arts and the Holy Cross Brothers authority permitted me to do so,” he says with a smile.

Unrecognized Talents

The above chalk drawings, although done anonymously, are so beautiful, so attractive. They show the talent of the artist. They show the artist's care and love placed in doing the art works. These simple artworks create a sense of joy in the hearts of their viewers.

Human beings are the best creations of God, who gave different quality to different person. In the Bible, these qualities and talents -- both spiritual and worldly -- are called 'charism.' They are also called 'gifts.' These are to be used for the benefit of mankind. They work as complement to each other.

Some people have the gifts of writing, speaking, singing, dancing, doing artistic works, producing good crops, showing extraordinary kindness to others, helping others, and so and so forth. Many a time, all these gifts do not get recognition and acceptance. Yet, the person with the gift go on doing what he likes to do best in the best way possible. Frequently we see how unjustifiable criticism and rejection nip many talents in the bud.

As fellow human beings, let us try to accept and recognize each other's talents and gifts. Let us support each other as much as possible. This way people will feel greatly encouraged and enthused to do further good for the society and country.
