Pope Francis, on October 9, announced 17 new cardinals, including one from Bangladesh -- Archbishop Patrick D'Rozario, CSC, 73, of the Archdiocese of Dhaka.

Pope said, "Their coming from 11 nations expresses universality of the church that proclaims and witnesses the good news of God's mercy in every corner of the earth," reports the Catholic News Service.

Among these 17 cardinals, 13 are under the age of 80 (of voting age -- they are also called 'cardinal-electors') who are eligible to vote in a conclave to elect a new pope, the other four, aged more than 80 or more years, are being honoured for their "clear Christian witness." This new crop of cardinals will officially be inducted to the College of Cardinals in the Vatican on November 19. With these 17 cardinal-electors, the College of Cardinals will have a total of 228 members -- of whom 121 will be voting cardinals and 107 will be non-voters.

Archbishop Patrick D'Rozario, CSC, was born at Padrishibpur village of Barisal District in 1943, he became a priest in 1972, became the bishop of Rajshahi Diocese in 1990, transferred to the Chittagong Diocese in 1995, and became the Archbishop of Dhaka in 2010.

Christianity first started in Bangladesh region in the late 16th century through the efforts of the Portuguese missionaries. Presently the total number of Catholics in Bangladesh is over 200,000 and the number of Protestants is over 100,000. Bangladesh has the following Catholic dioceses: Archdiocese of Dhaka, Diocese of Chittagong, Diocese of Dinajpur, Diocese of Khulna, Diocese of Rajshahi, Diocese of Mymensingh, Diocese of Sylhet, and Diocese of Barisal.
